Are Raclette Grills only to be used with Raclette Cheese - is that the source of their name?

Well, I guess, yes, the source of the raclette grill name is the raclette cheese. Tradition has it that a shepherd's lunchtime lump of cheese melted on a rock up in the mountains and he thought it was so delicious that the recipe become a tradition in his native land. Raclette is one of the traditional cheese of area, but I can't say I know if the shepherd of the story definitely had melted raclette cheese on his rock rather than Gruyere or Tomme or any other delicious cheese of the Alpen region. You can of course now use all sorts of cheese on the raclette grills, as well as meat or fish or vegetables. Just google raclette recipes and you will get a whole host of listings.
