What is a Raclette Supper?

Posting date: 24th June 2011 14:10

Many centuries ago in the Swiss Alps, a Raclette supper (from the French word, "raclet: to scrape") was a very simple meal enjoyed by shepherds and farming folk. They would gather around an open fire and hold a half round of their local Raclette cheese up to the heat of the flames. Using a knife the melted cheese was scraped onto potatoes or bread. This melting and scraping would continue till everyone ate their fill. Delicious!

Today Raclette refers to both the traditional Raclette cheese, and to the modern day electric Raclette Grill now used in Raclette suppers all over the world. The Raclette Grills have either a non-stick grill or a hot stone plate above a heating element with trays.

The dinner host prepares a selection of cheese, meat, fish, and vegetables slices, in different bowls. Each guest chooses their favourite food to grill - meat, fish, or vegetables on top while cheese melts in the trays below. Grill to personal taste, rare or well-done. Then enjoy with pickles, preserves, cooked potatoes and breads.

The beauty of a Raclette Supper is that it is relaxed and fun. Easy to prepare, easy on the guests. Everyone can experiment with their own themed suppers or personal taste and enjoy as much or as little of whatever they like on the table. Great for kids, too.
