What is the History of the Raclette Grill?

Posting date: 8th February 2010 17:55

It is received wisdom that the first raclette grill was "invented" or really, discovered, by a Swiss shepherd whose raclette cheese lunch melted on a hot stone in the High Alps one Summer. The shepherd thought that the melted cheese was so delicious that it became a practice that spread. Now the raclette grill is used widely, particularly in Switzerland and the parts of France and Germany closest to the Alps. Many of our customers have come back from holidays from this region, wanting to replicate at home what they have had in ski chalets and hotels in Europe.

Today, of course, the Raclette Grill can be either a hotstone or a grill with ridges, and is used for all different kinds of menus. The tabletop raclette is plugged into the electricy supply and the grill top heated that way, rather than by the rays of the sun in the High Alps.

There are hundreds of different recipes online for different kinds of raclette. It is a great way to have a very easy to prepare dinner party, with a bit of a difference.Try it, it is fun!
